The award was established in 1996 to honor Olympic and World champion Dave Schultz, whose career was cut short when he was murdered in 1996. He is a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and a member of the UWW Hall of Fame.

Sofia Macaluso of Otisville, New York, is the national winner of the Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award, named for four-time World Champion and the first woman to be inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
