Andy Schipul

May 15, 1954 - January 13, 2006

For 28 yrs Andy Schipul has coached three high school sports in Queen Anne's county on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In December of 2001 he was diagnosed with ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, and illness that have forced many a person to stop what they and justifiably take it easy at home.

But for Coach Andy Schipul, home has always bee about coaching young student-athletes in the wrestling room and on the fields where football and lacrosse are played. So Despite his diagnosis, Coach Schipul stayed in the saddle and promptly guided Kent Island High School to its most successful wrestling season in its four year , history, including a runner-up finish in the Bayside Conference and its first ever trip to the Class 2A/1A Dual meet tournament. Schipul was a unanimous selection as Mid-Shore Coach Of The Year without his peer knowing his condition. He coached lacrosse in the spring and in the fall he continued his duties as offensive and defense line coach for Kent Island High's varsity football team.

"I still like doing what I'm doing. I am not going to allow it to defeat what I do," said Schipul of ALS. As long as I can contribute I want to be able to."

Andy wrestled at Henderson Senior High School, West Chester, PA, then attended West Chester University, where he wrestled and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 1975. He moved onto the coaching ranks and was instrumental in developing wrestling programs at the high school and junior league levels at Queen Anne's County High School and Kent Island High.

From 1975 to 1977, Andy was head coach at Queen Anne's County high, were he coached two state champions, Kevin Barney and Al Waters. In 1997 it was Schipul's Lions who put and end to Coach Daniel Zottarelli's Kent County's HS 49 dual meet winning streak. His overall dual meet record at that time was 214-94; he had over 12 victories as head lacrosse coach.

Andy has also made wrestling a family affair. His wife Sharon has designed team programs and his daughters Dawn Kelly and Christine Hill have kept team score books for him. During his coaching career he has earned several honors and in 1990 was honored by the Maryland Public Schools Athletic Association for his dedication to the sport of wrestling.

When he isn't coaching Andy enjoys fishing for "Rockfish" on his boat on the Chesapeake Bay.
