Martin Marasch was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up on a farm in the New London, Wisconsin, area. At that time, New London High School did not offer wrestling as a sport, so Marty played football, track, and basketball. He attended the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, where he joined the wrestling team, competed, and became a letterman. He had discovered wrestling was in his blood and it became a major part of his life. His wrestling coaching career began with an unexpected telephone call from the athletic director and legendary football coach, Larry Van Alsteen, from Lourdes Academy at Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1966. That year in the WISAA (Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association) state tournament, Lourdes had a state champion, a runner-up, and several placers. Marty and his wife, Katie, moved to Little Chute in 1967, where he taught at the Little Chute middle school and coached the Little Chute wrestling team. He served as an assistant coach at Little Chute High School under Tom Gruman. Marty became head wrestling coach in Little Chute's first wrestling conference meet in 1968. One year later, Marty and Katie were blessed with the first of three girls, Missy, followed one year and one day later by Myndi and three years after that, Melanie. Because of his influence, Marty's girls loved to wrestle before wrestling was cool for girls! Marty and Katie will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this August 2017. In 1971, Marty took the newly created Parks and Recreation Director position with the Village of Little Chute, which he held until his retirement in July of 2001. Through his efforts, a youth wrestling program was developed to include kids from Little Chute's public and private schools AND programs, which he coached for many years. Marty became a registered WIAA wrestling official in the early 1970s. During his years as a wrestling referee, he worked at six WISSA and three WIAA state individual wrestling tournaments. He has presented four years of WIAA coaches and officials wrestling rule interpretation meetings for the WIAA. He and a small, tight-knit group of referees became an influential group of wrestling officials in Wisconsin and established the Fox Valley Wrestling Officials Association, which has grown to over fifty working referees. In 1988, Marty returned for his second stint as head wrestling coach at Little Chute High, a position he held until 2001. In his sixteen years of combined head coaching, he has accomplished thirty-four individual conference champions, five conference team championships, two state champions, four WIAA regional championships, four WIAA Sectional individual champions, and nine state qualifiers. Marty is a semi-retired volunteer fire chief, who still does fire inspections for the Village of Little Chute. He is also, of course, still involved with the Little Chute High School and Middle School wrestling program as a coach. Over the last fifty years, with his passion for the sport, Marty has left his mark on his family, the sport, his athletes and their parents, his coaching staff, fellow officials, and all the people he met along the way.
