Bill Hinchley
Bill Hinchley is one of the foremost names when it comes to wrestling and contributing efforts for its improvement in Minnesota. The long time Chairman of Minnesota/USA Wrestling and nationally recognized official has long been a workhorse for the development of wrestling in Minnesota. What started out with his two sons getting involved in wrestling turned into a lifetime love commitment and past-time. The 1959 Medford (MN) High School graduate never wrestled, but played football and basketball. Wrestling was not offered in those years and Bill says he would have if offered. Upon graduation Bill enlisted in the Army in October of 1959. He took advanced training in Alabama's Redstone Arsenal, specializing as a technician in the missile field. He spent two years in Germany. He was discharged in October of 1962. He was then hired by Jostens as a multi-functional technician in February of 1963, retiring in February of 2013. He worked at Jostens for 50 years, working as a supervisor and engineer at their original facility in Owatonna, MN. Over the years he took numerous courses in management from Minnesota State University-Mankato. This was certainly put to good use in his later reign as Chairman of MN/USA Wrestling too. Bill's sons were good wrestlers in the Owatonna wrestling program, from youth to high school. This motivated Bill to support their involvement and he got involved in many capacities, those being Public Address Announcer at OHS Wrestling events, Head Official for OHS high school tournaments, President of the Owatonna Wrestling Association, Treasurer of the Owatonna Sports Boosters, Clinician for many MN/USA Wrestling and other USA Wrestling national events, Head Official for several USA Wrestling tournaments throughout the nation, Tournament Director for numerous MN/USA state and national competitions, Officials Director for MN/USA Wrestling, President of MN/USA Wrestling and Chairman & CEO of MN/USA Wrestling. For Bill's many contributions he has received numerous honors, including "Silver Whistle Award" from MN/USA Wrestling, "Volunteer of the Year Award" from MN/USA Wrestling, "Lifetime Achievement Award" from USA Wrestling Mat Officials Association, "Legend Award" from Jostens, the Owatonna Freestyle Tournament named in Bill's honor, the "Bill Hinchley Freestyle & Greco Roman Open," inducted into the SE MN Wrestling Hall of Fame, inducted into the Dave Bartelma-MN Wrestling Hall of Fame, awarded "Outstanding Cadet National Tournament Mat Official Award" from USA Wrestling and "National Official of the Year" from USA Wrestling. Marty Morgan-NCAA Champion and former Assistant Head Wrestling Coach at the University of Minnesota says it best when he describes Bill Hinchley: "Bill's devotion to wrestling is only matched by a handful of people in the state of Minnesota. His knowledge and fairness as an official is unmatched." The Hinchley family includes Bill's supportive wife, Genelle, and three adult children in sons Brian (Jana) Hinchley in Lakeville, MN, Bruce (Melissa) Hinchley in Castle Rock, Colorado and daughter Gretchen (Luke) Hinchley-Lundquist of Maple Grove, MN. They also have nine grandchildren who are all good athletes!
