David Icenhower
One of the most prominent figures in college wrestling, David Icenhower maintains his hold on the hearts of students and peers alike. Having graduated from Lehigh University in 1971 and having earned a Master's in Education from TCNJ, Icenhower set the standard for excellence for the students he coached. The leader of 21 NCAA Division III champions, one NCAA Division I champion, 140 All-American Place Finishers for Division III, and 27 NWCA Scholar-Athlete Honorees, "Ice" headed the wrestling team and Trenton State College, later called The College of New Jersey, for 33 prestigious years as head coach. Prior to this position, he held the positions of Assistant Coach at Trenton State College and Head Coach at Navy Prep. Eternally dedicated to the sport in every aspect, Icenhower served for two terms on the NCAA Rules Committee and served as the Head Administrator of Wrestling Camps for 27 years. In addition, he dedicated his time for two terms on the Board of Directors of the NWCA. He has been a two time member of the NCAA Sport Committee in addition to serving as chairman for its Division III subcommittee. As well as being the Associate Athletic Director for TCNJ and overseeing the college's wide range of athletic opportunities, Icenhower served as the 1986 Tournament Director for the Division III Wrestling Championships. Enormously well-respected and admired by his peers, Icenhower was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year for 1979 and 1987, Metropolitan Tournament Coach of the Year fourteen times, and was the only NCAA Division III coach to ever be named a Head Coach in the prestigious East-West All Star Meet. With a coaching record of 535-80-4, Icenhower was able to maintain a positive and frank attitude throughout his coaching career. Respecting his students as much as they respected him, Icenhower remained truthful and frank when it came to recruitment and administrative duties. This is made abundantly evident in examining his six undefeated seasons in 1979, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1994, and 1995. In addition to this incredible record, he has led his teams to five NCAA Division II Team Championship titles in 1979, 1981, 1984, 1985, and in 1987. This combined with his 19 Top 5 NCAA Division III Finishes and 26 Metropolitan Conference Titles have led to Icenhower's prestigious and magnanimous coaching and officiating career to be one of significant note. Respected by coaches, parents, officials, and students alike, "Ice" never failed to impress and was able to lead successfully and encourage his students in their athletic pursuits, fostering a love of the sport and a dedication which would have been unattainable without such a figure to lead the way. A laundry list of Icenhower's career accomplishments only scrapes the surface of the man whose integrity and faultless character paved the way for so many brilliant athletes for whom the sport would be a better place.
