Frank Bissell

Frank S. Bissell is a true pioneer in Pennsylvania wrestling and is long overdue for recognition.

Frank wrestled for the University of Michigan and served as the Wolverine captain in 1937. He won the AAU National Wrestling Championship at 174 pounds in 1946 and had a runner-up finish at the 1940 Olympic Trials.

He was the head wrestling coach at The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, from 1947 to 1973. Frank had a career record of 214-62-4 and produced 17 National Prep Team Championships, six National Prep Tournament Outstanding Wrestlers, and 44 National Prep individual champions who combined for 62 total titles. Former wrestlers won two NCAA championships and had a pair of runner-up finishes.

Frank was also the head football coach from 1953 to 1964, compiling a 50-20-4 career record.

He was named National Wrestling Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 1996 and National High School Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 1997. Frank was named Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1996, 2001 and 2002 and was District 11 Coach of the Year in 1985, 1986, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2011.

Honored by The Hill School in 2010 with the Frank S. Bissell '33 Wrestling Endowment.
