Dave Miller was born and raised in Madison. He attended UW La Crosse and finished his college career at UW Madison. Dave's first coaching position was at age 14 with the city youth baseball league where he headed up a team of 9 year olds. He also added coaching youth football to his resume as a teen. In 1974 Dave applied for the Varsity Wrestling Coach at Madison Edgewood. In a span of five years he took this program from a handful of participants to 7 state champs and lead the Edgewood Crusaders team to two second place finishes in the WISAA State Tournament. In 1981 he returned to his alma mater Madison Memorial as Head Coach to the Spartan Wrestling team. Dave loved challenging his wrestlers to realize their goals and helped 11 wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament. Of those, three were state finalists and one was state champ. In 1982 Memorial won the Sectional being the only Madison school to accomplish this in over fifty years. During his time at Memorial Dave built his own career as an insurance professional. His entrepreneurial nature led him to open his own agency. At this time he purchased the Crossface newspaper from Russ Hellickson who was moving to Columbus, OH. This move showed that although insurance was Dave's profession, wrestling was his passion. Dave's involvement in youth wrestling grew as his son Joe took on the sport. Dave accompanied a youth team's visit to Japan in an exchange program. In 1988 Dave was hired as Executive Director of USA Wrestling. Here is where Dave made the sport of wrestling his profession. During his leadership at USA Wrestling the U.S. Olympic team earned 6 medals and the world teams brought home 15 medals. Dave also increased the youth membership by 100% during his tenure. Dave's proudest accomplishment as Executive Director was spearheading the first ever wrestling event with a prize purse. This World Championship of Wrestling held in Pittsburg, PA allowed wrestlers a medal and a paycheck. The sport of wrestling was further validated when Dave implemented pay for the National Team wrestlers. By 1991 Dave returned to Wisconsin and opened a wrestling sporting goods business. His company has helped to outfit wrestlers, teams, and gyms. Dave became an assistant at Middleton High School, where his son Joe was wrestling, and helped the team qualify for three Team State appearances. After Joe graduated, Dave became (and continues to be) a WIAA wrestling official. Of all his roles in wrestling, Dave takes officiating most seriously. He is committed to keeping matches fair, competitive and ultimately safe. Professionally Dave is the managing partner in Dollamur LP's wrestling mat and All American Wrestling Supply division. He still co-owns part of the Crossface. Dave lives in Middleton with his wife Sheila, daughter Alex, and son Ben. His older children Joe (Aimee) and Bridgette (Gregg) and five grandchildren (Olivia, Reese, Penni, Clementine, and Hendrix) live in the Madison area.
