Mike Jones
Mike Ray Jones is recognized for his years of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling.
Coached 38 individual NAIA Champions and one Olympic Champion
Coached the Canadian National team at two World Championships
Started the women's wrestling program in 1994 at SFU
Coach Jones coached at St. Helens for one year before moving to Simon Fraser University, where he has coached since 1976. Simon Fraser teams won the NAIA National Championship twice as a team and have thirty-eight individual NAIA champions. This represents the most NAIA champions of any institution.
Eighty-six of his wrestlers achieved All-American status, and one earned an Olympic gold medal. Mike has coached the Canadian National teams at three World Championships, two Junior World Championships and two Olympic games.
In 1994 Mike started the women's wrestling program and has won the CIS Championships the past two years. He has been selected twice NAIA Coach of the Year and twice CIS Women's Coach of the Year. Coach Jones has coached four medalists, including one gold medal winner at the Olympic Games. He has been elected to the Canadian Wrestling Association and NAIA Hall of Fames.
For his dedication and lasting influence on wrestling, Michael Ray Jones is presented the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's "Lifetime Service to Wrestling” award for the class of 2005.
