Jim Harmon
September 05, 1933 - October 16, 2014
Jim Harmon’s contributions to amateur wrestling spanned multiple roles as an athlete, coach, mentor, and military officer.
A graduate of West Waterloo High School, he competed under two legendary coaches, Roy Jarrard and Bob Siddens, compiling an outstanding 43-7 record and finishing as state runner-up in 1951. In addition to wrestling, Harmon was a multi-sport athlete, participating in football and track, and demonstrated leadership as president of the student senate.
In the fall of 1952, Harmond enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa), where he wrestled under renowned coaches Dave McCuskey and Bill Koll. He built an impressive collegiate career, posting a 58-5-1 record. Among his many achievements, he captured first place at the ISTC AAU Tournament in both 1952 and 1953, finished as the NCAA runner-up at 147 pounds in 1952, and claimed the NCAA championship at 157 pounds in 1953. His success helped establish ISTC as a national wrestling powerhouse during that era.
Following his graduation, Harmond enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954, continuing his involvement with the sport throughout his distinguished military service. During his time in the Navy from 1954 to 1958 and again from 1960 until his retirement in 1977, he remained active in wrestling, winning the 12th Naval District title and the All-Navy West Championship at 167 pounds in 1955.
Harmond also coached at the Naval Air Station Moffett Field in California, where he led his teams to a flawless 12-0 record, securing both the 12th Naval District and All-Navy (West) championships in 1955 and 1956. In addition to coaching, he mentored countless young servicemen, fostering leadership and discipline through the sport of wrestling.
Harmond concluded his naval career as a Captain and decorated pilot, honored with prestigious awards including the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. These decorations reflect both his valor and his dedication to service.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Harmond continued to support wrestling in various capacities, including community coaching and advocacy for the sport at the grassroots level. His legacy lives on through the athletes he influenced and the example he set as a competitor, leader, and patriot.
Harmond was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997.
