Cougars finish 8th at 2010 NJCAA National Wrestling Championships
February 27, 2010
Des Moines, IA: Clackamas came into the national showcase ranked #6 in the final NJCAA wrestling poll and, after the dust settled, walked away with a respectful 8th place finish in the final DIV 1 standings (scholarship division). The Cougar Wrestlers ended the season with a 7 win 4 loss 1 tie dual meet record and 4 NJCAA All American's.
Sophomore Anthony Weerheim made it to the 141 lb semifinals before suffering his first loss of the year in a very tight 4 to 2 contest. 'Anthony had a great first day of wrestling and got up on the Iowa Central kid in the semi but just couldn't hang on', said Coach Josh Rhoden. 'He had a great season and a tough tournament, I am sure we sill see big things from Anthony down the road', he continued.
157 lber Tarrence Williams went 5 and 2 on the tournament en router to a 5th place finish. 'Tarrence is so explosive...he is fun to watch, coach and be around. Our staff is really excited to have him returning next year for us', said Rhoden.
Derek Mestovich picked up 4 wins against 2 losses to pull out seventh place finish at 165 lbs. 'Derek had a really tough kid his 2nd match of the tournament and suffered a heartbreaking 1 point loss but wrestled back really well to earn his All American finish.'
Finally, Rudy Schaffroth was 4 and 2 on the weekend to pick up a team high 4th place at the 285 division. 'Rudy wrestled his way back through the tournament very well. He had to beat a guy who beat him early in the tournament to place as high as he did. We were excited for Rudy and his finish at the Championships.'
The Cougar team fell just short of a trophy in the team race with Colby finishing in 6th place just 3.5 points ahead of the Cougars. 'You know we really didn't have the type of tournament we wanted to this year as a group and that is disappointing to each of us. That is not to take away what our individuals did or anything but we have got to expect more here and this is the worst finish we have had since starting here in 2006/07 (Coach Rhoden era). I can promise you that you will not find a more motivated group of coaches and athletes as we recruit and prepare for the 2010/11 season.'

Iowa Central, 116 pts; Labette, 105.5; North Idaho, 99.0; Meramec, 96.5; NW Wyoming, 96.5; Colby, 61.0; Iowa Lakes, 58.5; Clackamas, 57.5; Highline, 47.0; SW Oregon, 40.0.
