Masao Miyake is recognized for his years of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling

Coach Miyake started his coaching career in 1971 when he started the program at Stayton High School. He left Stayton after one year to become assistant coach at Gresham High School, where he coached for the next 14 years. After being out of wrestling for one year Coach Miyake became freshman coach at Clear Creek Middle School. His teams won the Mt. Hood Conference freshman district championship twice.

He held several junior development tournaments and helped officiate at the state Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments from 1972 to 1986. In 1984 he was selected as the head coach to take the Oregon Culture Exchange team to Germany where he had a very successful tour. In addition, he hosted teams from Japan in 1980,1983, 1984 and 1989.

In 1979 Masao started officiating high school matches while still coaching and made it a full time avocation in 1986 when he retired from coaching

He was selected to work the state tournament his 1st year as an official and qualified every year.

In 1993 and 1995 he was selected as the “Official of the Year” by the Oregon High School Wrestling Coaches' Association.

For his dedication and lasting influence on wrestling, Masan Miyake is presented the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's "Lifetime Service to Wrestling" award for the class of 2003.
