Frank Ball
Frank Ball began his coaching career back in 1961 at the Landon School in Bethesda, MD, where his teams won the League Championship for 3 out of his 4 years there.
In 1966, Frank took over the wrestling program at Melrose High School. He coached at Melrose High School until 1982; Frank is considered the "founding father" of Melrose High School Wrestling and his legacy is one of outstanding success. During his days at Melrose High School, Coach Ball helped to make Melrose High School's wrestling program one of the best in the state. While at Melrose High School, Frank also taught Physical Education and coached football and track.
Under Coach Ball's direction, Melrose High School compiled an impressive record of 215 wins, 73 losses and 2 ties. During his sixteen year career at Melrose high School Coach Ball's teams captured the Middlesex League Championship 12 times. They were Co-Champions 1 year and Tri Champions for 1 year. In 1979 Melrose High School captured the Division I North Championship and was Division I State Runner-up. Coach Ball's teams placed 2nd four times in the Sectional Tournament.
Coach Ball was selected Division I North "Coach of the year" in 1979. He was recognized by the Massachusetts Wrestling Coaches Association in 1985 and was elected to the Melrose High School Hall Of Fame in 2000. Coach Ball was also instrumental in establishing the first Booster Club for wrestling at Melrose High School.
Frank grew up in Brookline where he played football and was selected an All-Scholastic Quarterback. After graduation he attended Springfield College and later served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corp. Frank still resides in Melrose with his wife Viola. Frank and Viola have three adult children: James, an officer in the U.S. Army, Mark a Harvard MBA graduate and businessman and daughter Jacqueline, a Psychiatric Physician.
