Arnold Torgerson (Torgy)

Arnold (Torgy) Torgerson Jr. is recognized for his years of dedication as a coach, to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling.
Coached 33 years and and had a dual meet record of 250-150
Torgy is not only known for his outstanding achievements in wrestling, but in golf and gymnastics where he also produced state champions.
Torgy graduated from Denver South in 1950 where he was a second-place state finisher in wrestling at 112 pounds and fifth in gymnastics on the flying rings.
He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1954 where he was the Big 8 runner-up at 123 pounds in 1954.
He was an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) national champion in 1953 and 1954. He earned his master's degree in math at Colorado State University in 1961.
Torgy began his coaching career at Delta where he produced the school's first state champion in 1957.
He moved to Fort Collins high school in 1957 as a coach and math teacher. While there, he started the school's first programs in golf and swimming and became the head wrestling coach in 1964.
He also started the first gymnastics program at Poudre coaching Fort Collins and Poudre as separate teams.
He produced eight individual state wrestling champions, coached Fort Collins to golf championships in 1961 and 1987 and was golf coach of the year in 1987.
He is the founder of the Fort Collins Coaches Association.
Following his retirement from coaching in 1988, Torgy became the Executive Director of the Colorado High School Coaches Association's All-State Summer Games.
Under his leadership the CHSCA added the sports of wrestling, volleyball and softball to its summer program and has experienced tremendous growth.
He also continued to direct Fort Collins wrestling events.
He was a recipient of the Colorado Athletic Directors Association's Coaching Excellence Award in 1987 and was inducted into the Colorado Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000.
Arnold Torgerson has given a lifetime of service to the youth of Colorado through his dedication to the sport of wrestling as a coach, mentor, administrator and role model.
