W Roy Phillips was not only one of the three or four finest wrestlers in F&M history among a long line of performers in the Mayser dynasty, but he subsequently stepped into Uncle Charlie's shoes as head coach and added further luster to his career in wrestling. Roy coached at Upper Merion, University of Pennsylvania and Valley Forge Military Academy. In 1949 he returned to F&M as varsity wrestling coach, a position he would hold for the next 18 years. His record at F&M was 118-68-7 and included his last varsity year when his team had a 9-1-1 record, defeating the Ivy League champion, Princeton. Roy served F&M as Director of Athletics from 1967 to 1977. The honors have been many for a man who has done much, and probably one of the greatest honors came when Franklin and Marshall honored Roy by endowing the wrestling program in his name and the W. Roy Phillips Wrestling Room. Over the past 70 years the name Roy Phillips and Franklin & Marshall Wrestling are spoken in the same sentence.
