Al Kohlhafer

AL KOHLHAFER has been coaching wrestling at Northeast High School since 1969 as well as being a referee at tournaments for over twenty five years. His service to wrestling as an official included four years at the National Junior Championships at the University of Iowa. He has hosted over twenty freestyle tournaments at Northeast fro over 30 years and opened his "Mat Club" wrestling room doors to wrestlers throughout the state. In Coach Kohlhafer's collegiate years at the University of Baltimore he was a Mason-Dixon Conference Champion his senior year. Coach Kohlhafer has organized many wrestling clinics at Northeast with many NCAA Champions and World Class wrestlers as Chris Campbell. He also assisted Steve Combs with organizing and arranging dual meets with Maryland teams while traveling to Iowa. Meets would include teams from Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and Illinois, and Wisconsin and wrestlers would stay in homes or schools in these states. Besides all his extra work he still had time to coach 13 individual State Champions , was the first Anne Arundel County school to win a state championship and one National High School Championship. His career coaching record at Northeast was 234-125-1 while winning two Maryland State Championships. His wrestlers have gone on the collegiate ranks to win three NCAA National Titles ant a total of seven All Americans. Coach Kohlhafer leads by example as a great role model for his athletes. His old school ways or wearing a coat and tie for each competition is a great example to our coaching community. He followed the example of his father Ben Kohlhafer, 2018 Lifetime Service Inductee. Coach Ben Kohlhafer born in 1911, started his wrestling career at the Central YMCA near his home in Baltimore. His coaching career of over 40 years in the YMCA.
