Joel Kind graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1964 where he competed in cross country, wrestling and track. His coach for all 3 sports was charter Hall of Fame member Kirby Symes. Kirby had a lasting impression on Joe, in both athletics and academics, influencing him to go on to the University of Wisconsin - Madison. While there he had the opportunity to wrestle for George Martin. Joe graduated in 1969 with a Bachelors Degree in Science Education. Joe's first teaching job was at Pulaski where he started a grade school wrestling program as well as being freshman wrestling coach, head cross country coach, and assistant track coach. He served as an assistant coach to Hall of Famer Jim Richie for 9 years. Richie had a profound influence on Joe's approach to wrestling and heightened his enthusiasm for the sport. Consequently, Joe became involved in both the United States Wrestling Federation and the Amateur Athletic Union wrestling programs, as a referee and coach. He also served as secretary- treasurer of the Federation. Joe and his staff hosted many developmental clinics at Pulaski and ran freestyle tournaments. Joe many times served as team leader or assistant coach to the Junior National Tournament. He served as the head coach of Wisconsin's first International High School Exchange Team to Romania in 1975 in which Larry Marchionda (Hall of Fame 1983) was team leader and Andy Rein (Hall of Fame 1986) was a competitor. Upon its return to the United States, the team captured the National Greco-Roman Championship for Wisconsin at the National Championships, upsetting a heavily favored Oklahoma team. Joe served as the WWCA district representative for Area 2 for 2 terms before being elected to head the Association in 1981. In 1972, Joe became the Wisconsin state editor for Scholastic Wrestling News Magazine presently known as Wrestling USA Magazine, a position he continues today. In addition, he has been a long-time contributor to The Crossface. Joe served as a WIAA referee from 1968 to 1982 and was a member of the Wrestling Rules Advisory Committee. In 1978. Joe became the 2nd head wrestling coach in the history of Pulaski High School, succeeding Jim Richie. Since that time he has amassed a 168-28-3 record. His teams have won 7 Bay Conference titles, 7 regional, 6 sectional and 27 invitational championships. He has coached 96 All-Conference wrestlers, 47 state participants, 14 state place winners and 2 state champions. His teams are consistently ranked in the top 10 in the state. Joe is very committed to his community, having served as president of the Pulaski Lions Club, as a member of his church's council, and has received numerous awards, including Teacher of the Year in 1982.
