William Hastings
William T. Hastings was named Head Wrestling coach for the United States Army in Fort Lee, Virginia after graduating from Penn State in 1958.
From 1964-1971 Mr. Hastings was an officer starting the Maryland United States Wrestling Association (now the MSWA) with Ed Peery and Bob Kopnisky, coaches at the U.S. Naval Academy, and Dick Shelly, Head Coach of Montgomery Junior College.
In 1963 he began the Tri-County Wrestling Tournament including Anne Arundel, Prince Georg and Montgomery Counties. This tournament was instrumental in beginning the 1st Maryland State Wrestling Tournament in 1970. Paul Rusko, Severna Park H.S. head coach helped in this endeavor.
In 1960, Coach Hastings founded the wrestling program at Glenn Burnie High School and in 1965 became the Head Coach at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute a position he held until his retirement in 1990. He also served as Athletic Director from 1984-1990.
In his tenure as coach at Poly, he was a member of the Maryland Scholastic Association his team were MSA League Champions in 1970-71; finished 2nd in this tournament 3 times behind Mt. St. Joseph, Gilman school Mt. St. Joseph in 1990. Coach Hastings coached 28 individual MSA Champions, Poly was also Baltimore Public School Champs 4 of 8 years between 1982 and 1990. Coach Hastings retired from coaching in 1990.
Bill found time to officiate for 37 years. He started officiating in the M.W.O.A. and has officiated the Mason Dixon Conference Tournament from 1968-1980. In 1983 he was named Commissioner for the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association, a position he held until 2003. During the MPSSAA tournament bill was an evaluator of officials.
Over his career he received many honors including Induction to the MPSSAA Wrestling Hall of Fame; NWCA 25 Year Service to Wrestling Award; Recipient of the “Contribution to Wrestling Award” by the MWOA; Penn State Wrestling Club.
Elizabeth and Bill have five children, raised on a small farm in Carroll County and all attended Public School in Westminster, Maryland. They were blessed with six Grandchildren, Elizabeth and Bill now reside in Bachman’s Valley outside Westminster, Maryland.
