Michael Hampe

Mike Hampe was quite simply on of Maryland’s most successful high school wrestling coaches. During his 23 year head coaching career at Old Mill High School, his teams amassed ad record of 257-37-3 and made winning titles a habit.

Under Coach Hampe’s leadership Old Mill won six State Championships. Placed second four times, and finished in the top six 15 of 17 years. He coachee 20 individual State Champions. The most in Maryland high school history at that time in 1999.

Hampe’s Patriots also won 14 Anne Arundel County Dual Meet Championships, 10 County Tournament crowns and even dozen regional titles. Hampe ended his 25 year coaching career in the high school ranks at after a two year as Head Coach at Annapolis High School.

In addition to earning several local wrestling association honors, Hampe was named Coach of the Year by the Washington Post in 1989 and the Baltimore Sun IN 1991. In 1990 he was indicted into the Maryland Public Schools Athletic Association “Wrestling Hall of Fame”. Eleven years later, 2001 he was inducted in the Lock Haven (PA) University “Wrestling Hall of Fame”.

A three sport standout at Severna Park High School, Hampe was an Anne Arundel County Champion in Wrestling, earned “All County Honors in football as a running back, and won a State Track and Field championship in the Pole Vault. On the collegiate level, he wrestled for the national powerhouse Lock Haven University.

Mike and his wife Bonnie have been married 40 years. The have two daughters, Kate and Beth, and a son Jay.
