Spencer Chang

Spencer Chang began his teaching and coaching career at Franklin County High School, where he remained for seven years.

In 1982, Chang accepted a teaching and head coach position with Martinsville City Schools. He took a down and out wrestling team and built a program that would become dominant in the area. Chang coached two state champions, numerous state finalists and countless state place-winners while being named district coach of the year seven times.

Chang was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1999 and forced to retire.

After being given only a few months to live, Coach Chang demonstrated to his wrestlers what he had instilled in them as he fought as hard as humanly possible. One year and seven months later, he passed away.

Perhaps more important than award and championships was the love and devotion to wrestling that Chang demonstrated and shared.

His laid-back charm and warm smile will always be etched in the minds of those who knew him while his kindness and compassion will remain forever in the hearts and minds of the young men whose lives he touched.
