Fletcher Carr

Fletcher Carr established himself at East High School in Erie, Pennsylvania as an outstanding all-city football player, a champion wrestler, and a four-year track star.

With Fletcher as a two-way tackle, East’s football team finished 7-2 for three straight years (1965-67). He was named Second-Team All-City in 1966 and First Team in 1967.

He received numerous wrestling accolades at East and his talents led him to the University of Tampa. His football teams won 34 games in four years and he was named an Honorable Mention All-American as a senior. Fletcher was an undefeated, two-time 190-pound NCAA College Division national wrestling champion in 1972 and 1973 and a four-time All-American. His final college career record was 73-1 with 69 pins.

Fletcher became the first African-American head coach at the University of Kentucky and, in fact, in all of Division I. His first team went 7-11 in 1973, but sported a 26-5 mark in 1975, won the SEC and held a No. 11 national ranking. Fletcher led the Wildcats for 10 years, winning two SEC team titles and was a two-time SEC Coach of the Year honoree.

Fletcher was inducted into the Tampa Hall of Fame in 1983 and Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017.
