Ed Onorato
Ed Onorato may be an alumnus of Erie Tech, but statewide, wrestling fans recognize him in the Orange and Black of Cathedral Prep. Ed Onorato graduated from Tech in 1958, where he won 1958 Erie City and District X Championships. He moved on to Slippery Rock State College (now University), winning several PSAC and 4-1 championships. He graduated from the Rock in the winter of 1964 and sought his fortune in the East. While wrestling for the Lancaster (PA) YMCA team, an amateur powerhouse in the 60's, Ed participated in the 1964 Olympic trials and coached one season at Lancaster Catholic High School. After serving as a graduate assistant at the University of Arizona in 1965, Onorato returned to the Pennsylvania lakeshore as the head coach at Behrend College. He stayed for 12 years posting 4 Penn State Commonwealth Campus Championships, while coaching 3 NJCAA regional place winners, 2 NJCAA All-Americans, 2 NAIA District 18 Champions and I0 NAIA District 18 place winners. In 1978 he left Behrend to coach Erie Cathedral Preparatory High School where he just finished his 24th year. During that time, he has coached the Ramblers to one undefeated season, one Miami Valley team championship, 5 Metro team championships, 3 Section team championships, 2 District X team championships and 3 Central Northwest/Northwest Regional team championships. Individually, he has coached 4 Manheim Holiday Tournament champions, 38 Sectional champions, 29 District X champions, 20 Regional champions and 5 PIAA state finalists including 3 State champions. He has also kept his hand in youth wrestling, coaching at the Erie YMCA , the DeAnna Wrestling Club and the Greater Erie Wrestling Club. He served as an assistant coach of the Pa. Jr. National Freestyle team from 1974-78 and assisted the Jr .National Freestyle and Greco teams from 1986 to 1992. He was head coach of the Greco team from 1993 to 1998. Onorato resides in Erie and continues to teach and coach at Erie Prep.
