Over seven decades ago, Austin Bishop wrestled for Franklin & Marshall College. While a member of that team, he became the first wrestling coach at F&M Academy in 1926. Austin Bishop was an innovator in the sport of wrestling. He designed and published what may be the first wrestling score and record book, he wrote Freestyle Wrestling (Spaulding, 1939), and he designed an early headgear for competitors. After receiving his PhD from New York University, he was called into active Military duty and served two stints, rising to the rank of Colonel. He counts among his decorations the Legion of Merit. He was recalled for his second tour and assigned as Chief of Army Athletics and Recreation. He sponsored the addition of wrestling to the "All-Army Sports Program" and was instrumental in obtaining special duty assignments for prospective Olympic wrestlers. Dr. W. Austin Bishop was known as the "Father of Lancaster County Wrestling."
