John Davis

Coach Coach Davis was an intramural wrestler during his college days and was not hooked on the sport until his son, Jeff joined the Miami Killian Wrestling team. Then as we say the rest is history as he started to take his sons along with other young wrestlers to Miami Military Academy and Miami Dade Jr. College several nights a week for workouts. In 1970 his coaching career began when he started a wrestling program at Richmond Heights Jr. High School. While producing a dual meet record of 98 and 5, Coach Davis was recognized as the USWF Man of the Year in Florida wrestling and in 1974 was named Coach of the Year in Junior High School Wrestling. After 10 years as Junior High coach he became the head coach at Miami Killian High School for the next 8 years where he produced and 85-29-1 dual meet record. This included 15 State medal winners, 5 state champions and at least one wrestler in the state championship finals each year and a top 5 team finish at the state tournament 6 out of his 8 years. Even after retiring from coaching in 1987, each year you can find Coach Davis and his wife Ester at the Florida High School Championships, sitting in the coaches' section at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and avid rooters for grandsons John and Nick, at the Gainesville High matches and most of the USA Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments through the state. In 1999 he was honored by having the outstanding wrestler award at the Gainesville Open named "The John Allen Davis Sr. Outstanding Wrestler Award".
