Robert Miller grew up on a farm in Southwest Wisconsin and attended Fennimore High School. Wrestling had not started in this part of the state and Bob's first exposure was in a fundamentals class for physical education students at UW-LaCrosse. After teaching in Woodstock, IL in 1963-64, he went to the University of Iowa to earn a Master's degree in Physical Education. While there he was able to take another course in wrestling fundamentals and coaching techniques under Coach Dave McCuskey. Bob began his wrestling coaching career at Muscoda High School for two years, before going to Omro for two years. He then returned to teaching and coaching in Muscoda, which had consolidated with Blue River to create Riverdale High School. From 1969 to 1977, Bob was a physical education and health instructor and a wrestling, girls volleyball, football and track at Riverdale. He has been an active member in the state and national physical education associations and in June, 1997, he retired from both teaching and coaching. While coaching wrestling, his teams compiled a 271-96-1 dual meet record with a vast majority of the 96 losses to outstanding non-conference Division I and II schools that helped pave the way for three team state championships and two runners-up. Throughout Bob's coaching years at Riverdale, there were 13 individual state champions and 33 state place winners. At the regional level he compiled 15 team titles and 109 individual champions and 37 sectional champions. Eleven conference dual meet titles and eight conference tournament titles were also captured during Bob's coaching tenure. Bob developed the concept for the present SWAL tournament where large and small schools are seeded respectively and then slid into a perfect matrix for a 16-man bracket.
