Dr. Kenneth Cox

August 31, 1933 - February 05, 2022

Dr. Kenneth Cox can truly be called a Renaissance Man of Wrestling.

He is well-respected in both academic and athletic circles as a wrestling and boxing coach, author, clinician, instructor, manager and administrator.

Cox earned his doctorate (1969) and a master's degree from the University of Washington (1960) while also earning a master's degree from California State University-Northridge (1961) and a bachelor's degree from East Stroudsburg University (1955).

A 1951 graduate of Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he is a retired colonel from the U.S. Army Reserve & Army National Guard.

Cox competed in wrestling, football and track and field in high school, as well as in Mid-Atlantic AAU boxing and American Legion baseball.

At East Stroudsburg, Cox won nine varsity letters while also competing in wrestling, football and track and field. He served as wrestling team captain and was a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference runner-up in 1954. He was co-captain of the track team in 1955, earned all-conference honors as a guard on the football team in 1954, and had a 20-5 record competing in the Mid-Atlantic AAU boxing program.

A finalist in the 1956 U.S. Olympic Trials in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, Cox was All-Army heavyweight champ in both freestyle and Greco-Roman in 1956 and competed in over 30 state, regional, national and international competitions, placing fifth at heavyweight in the 1952 National AAU tournament.

His career wrestling coaching record is 225-94-6 in 25 years, including 101-50-2 from 1970-1979 at Lock Haven University.

He also made his mark in the boxing circles as founder/director of the LHU Collegiate Boxing Invitational and as head coach for 20 years. During that span he coached 14 National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) champions who won 18 individual titles and he produced 82 All-Americans.

Among his many activities, which are too numerous to mention in total, Cox was a member of the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Committee from 1964-68, president of the NAIA Coaches and Officials Association in 1966 and one of the original founding fathers of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL).

Cox was elected to the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991, the NAIA Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1993, the Lock Haven Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1996, the PSAC Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998, the East Stroudsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Clinton County Chapter) in 1993.

He received seven distinguished coaching awards, five academic honors awards for teaching, is the author of over 500 journal articles and has been the guest speaker at over 350 clinics and seminars.

His master's thesis at Washington led to the adoption of the NCAA :01-second fall and FILA-controlled fall and reduction of bout length.

For these reasons and more, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame honors Kenneth M. Cox with a Lifetime Service to Wrestling award.
