Stephen Erber
Steve Erber coached 24 years, two years as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland before founding the wrestling program at Binghamton University where he coached the next 22 years. A native of Huntington, N.Y., Steve served as wrestling coach at Binghamton University from 1967-88.As a faculty member, he founded the wrestling program as a club team in 1967, and was its first varsity coach two years later. He also served eight years as assistant athletic director, five years as associate athletic director, and was promoted to full professor in 1989. In 22 years at the wrestling helm, Erber lifted Binghamton into the national spotlight with a dozen top 20 teams including six in the top ten, four individual NCAA Champions, and 152 career dual meet victories. Four of his teams placed among the top five in the country, highlighted by the 1984 squad's third-place finish at the NCAA Championship. That national achievement remains the greatest of any university team in 71 years of athletic competition. He coached 34 All-Americans and 55 All-State wrestlers, and also produced 19 SUNYAC and 11 New York State Collegiate champion s. Erber brought the NCAA Division Ill Championships to Binghamton in 1977 and again in 1984, the only such national events ever hosted by the university. He also initiated the New York State Collegiate Championships, an event that began in 1970 and has continued for 50 years. Honors have been wide spread for Erber, who has been inducted into the Binghamton University Athletic Hall of Fame, the National Division Ill Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, the New York State College Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, and was named the Penn State Wrestling Alumnus of the Year. He also received the 1985 SUNY Athletic Conference Distinguished Service Award. In 1984 he served as an honorary coach for the East team in the NWCA East-West All-Star Classic. He was the recipient of the NWCA Meritorious Service Award, and the first Binghamton Wrestling Lifetime Achievement Award, which is now named in his honor. The legacy Steve Erber leaves cannot be measured in the number of matches won or hours given. He is a role model for everyone his life touches. He has given a lifetime of service to the youth of America through the sport of wrestling. * 1984 NCAA Division Ill Coach of the Year * 1975 and 1984 New York State Collegiate Coach of the Year * 1980 and 1984 SUNY Athletic Conference Coach of the Year
