Darrel Hafling
Darrel Hafling Is recognized for his years of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling. Coached 26 years - Officiated wrestling 35 years - Published "Faded Glory - The Colorado High School Wrestling Tournament 1936 Through 1986", and yearly updates from 1987-1998. In 1949 Darrel A. Hafling began his coaching career at Boulder High School, moving the next year to Las Animas High School, and again in 1953 to Golden High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1984. He coached 26 years and enjoyed a career record of 221-124-6, winning 8 League Championships. During that time he was the Wrestling Coach for the 1965 Colorado All-Star Team to Japan; a trainer for the 1967 USA Junior World Team; Greco Coach for the 1969 USA Team at the Junior World Championships; and in 1977, he was the Wrestling Coach for the North Team in the North/South Colorado All Star Dual. He also coached teams that traveled to Mexico three times, and to five European countries. Hafling refereed five National Junior College tournaments, 20 National tournaments and six World Championship Tournaments. He was named to the 1977 "Who's Who in the West", 1980 Wrestling coach of the Year for District 6, 1980 Wrestling Coach of the Year in Colorado. He received the Jefferson County Athletic Hall of Fame Award and was previously inducted into the CHSCA Hall of Fame. In 1986, Hafling published the book "Faded Glory - the History of Colorado High School State Wrestling Tournaments from 1936-1986". In addition, he has published yearly updates from 1986-1998. Darrel Hafling's deep love for the sport of wrestling, and its ability to help youth of all sizes and ages, has motivated him to give a lifetime of service to the youth of America through the sport of wrestling.
