Melvin L. Calhoun coached 34 of his 36 years in Nyssa, Oregon. His teams have been very successful winning the Treasure Valley League Championship four times, the A Championship - Oregon Wrestling Classic in 1989, the Invitational Wrestling Tournament 24 times from 1962 to 1995, and the District 7AA Greater Oregon League Championship seven times, Coach Calhoun's teams also won the AA State Championship two times and were Runners-up four times.

Coach Calhoun has been recognized by being named AA Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1968, 1990, and AA Coach of the year in 1990. He was named TVWL Coach of the Year three times and Teacher of the Year in District 26 in 1990. He also received the 1993 Coos Bay, Oregon Lion's Club Award for involvement with coaching for four decades.

The legacy Melvin Calhoun left cannot be measured in the number of matches won or champions coached. He was a role model for everyone his life touched.

Coach Calhoun has given a lifetime of service to the youth of America through the sport of wrestling.
