Budd Whitehill
For 37 years, the name of Budd Whitehill was synonymous with the Lycoming College Wrestling program. Coach Whitehill, a native of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, passed away in the summer of 1993, but the two remain linked forever. The wrestling program at Lycoming was dedicated in the name of Budd Whitehill in April of 1993, a tribute to the coach who started the wrestling program there in 1956 and was its only head coach for 37 seasons. Whitehill led Lycoming to a 376-173-5 record during his 37 seasons. The team enjoyed 34 seasons of .500 or better and won a record 10 Mid-Atlantic Conference championships during his career. His 376 victories rank third all-time among NCAA Division ill coaches and eighth among coaches in all divisions. His 37 years of continuous service ranked eighth all-time among NCAA coaches. Under Whitehill's leadership, the team had 26 different wrestlers earn All-American status. Included in this total, five wrestlers were NCAA Division II champions. From 1973 to 1993, every Lycoming wrestler to stay in the program all four years, won at least one Mid-Atlantic Conference championship. In 1991, he was enshrined in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 1993, Whitehill received the Makisu Award, given by the student body to a faculty or staff member for outstanding service to the college community. For all his contributions to the Lycoming College wrestling program and for motivating young athletes, Budd Whitehill is honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his lifetime service to wrestling.
