As a physician Dr. Conkwright's contributions include: "¢ Membership on the VHSL committee that studied the effects of weight loss in wrestlers. "¢ Devising a method to drain hematomas of the ears by using a special clamp and cast, which has helped reduced the deformity known informally as "cauliflower ear." "¢ Introduced in 1994, the use of "super flue" to treat small cuts received during matches, thus shortening delays for blood time in matches. "¢ Devising, in 1996, a method of "T" packing and nose wrapping to treat persistent nosebleeds. Doc has lectured to medical colleagues, trainers, and coaches as well as written articles on various sports medicine subjects associated with wrestling. He has served as a tournament physician at district, regional and state wrestling tournaments. As a coach, he applied lessons he had learned after a shoulder injury suffered early in life and developed a special technique of leg wrestling. He served eight years as chairman of the Virginia State A.A.U. Dr. Conkwright is a recipient of the VSHS Athletic Director's Association 1995 Distinguished Service Award for Virginia High School Athletics.
