Stan Weigel son of Melvin and Virginia Weigel was born, August 28th, 1954 in Fort. Monmouth, NJ, while Dad was serving in the military. He was the older of 2 children. Stan and Sister Diana Weigel (Flogel) were raised on a Dairy farm in rural Platteville, WI. Stan's first introduction to wrestling was by Coach Dick Headington who asked him in the hallway one day what he weighed, and said he needed a 112-pound wrestler. My first match was the first experience in wrestling, I had never seen a match. He became a four-year starter for Platteville from 1968 to 1972, wrestling weights from 112 to 132 and compiling a 62 -29 record. Coach Headington instilled in me, a love of the sport and challenges in wrestling. After High school Stan still had a great desire to compete in wrestling at a higher level. He decided to go to UW Platteville. Under the guidance of Coach Bob Seamans and Bob Garcia and several outstanding college wrestlers he learned very sound techniques that helped compete at a high level. While competing in College he was fortunate to be able to compete against all levels including Division 1 and Olympians in open tournaments all over the US. Stan made many friends in the wrestling ranks. Because of all the travel he was able to see many places that he would not have seen otherwise. In College Stan had a great deal of success and his confidence grew while being a 3-time National tournament Qualifier. Upon graduation from UW Platteville, Stan accepted a job at Monticello, Wisconsin teaching K-12 Physical Education and Driver Education. He was also the Head wrestling coach and Co Track coach. Stan was at Monticello for 2 years, from fall of 1977 to the fall of 1979 until accepting a job at Boscobel Area schools to teach K -6 Physical Education as well as Head Coach for wrestling and Assistant Coach for Football. Stan served in that capacity from the fall of 1979 to the spring of 2012 when he went to the Middle School program and is currently coaching the middle school wrestlers. During that time, he won one SWAL conference Championship in a very competitive conference. His Teams were ranked in the top 10 in the Class C and Class B divisions for many of those years, eight regional titles and one Sectional class B title. Stan also had multiple tournament team championships. His team was runner up in the highly regarded Bi State tournament in La Crosse, and three times in the State team Play offs. We had four state Champions, five, if one of the wrestlers wouldn't have had an appendix attack, sixty-three state qualifiers many of which placed on the podium. One wrestler became a USA all American. Three went on to be College wrestling All Americans. Seven of his wrestlers have become wrestling coaches themselves. Rich Bender who wrestled for Boscobel has become the Executive Director of USA Wrestling and has connections to the US Olympic Committee. Stan would like to thank: Gene Larsen who started the Boscobel Wrestling program in 1962 and was the 1st wrestling coach. Gene, who was Principal at the time, hired Stan as Wrestling Coach. Gary Gutknecht for bringing my name up for nomination and being his friend and competitor for 45 plus years. Dale Spies and Bob Miller of Riverdale, Allen Bauman of Mineral Point, Greg Jentz of Fennimore for being friends and helping in making wrestling great in our area. Thanks to all the coaches I have had the privilege to coach against in the past 40 plus years. I would also like to thank the parents and wrestlers of Boscobel for their support and never letting me down. Stan contributed his success to the great Assistant coaches he has had in Jeff Novinska, Steve Wacker and Jay Fitzgerald, and the many youth coaches Boscobel has had throughout the years. I would like to thank my Parents for instilling in me a good work ethic and their support in whatever I did. They followed my teams for many years while they were healthy. Stan has 2 sons and 8 stepchildren. His sons Hans and Eric wrestled for him and did very well. Stan currently lives outside of Boscobel with his wife Mary. Stan continues to support wrestling in the area. Outside of wrestling Stan likes to Cycle, fish, and build things.
