Steve Sabo
A pillar of wrestling excellence at Herndon High School, Coach Steve Sabo has committed over four decades to nurturing champions and leaders through the sport. His illustrious career and service legacy reflect his deep dedication to youth development and the wrestling community.
Coach Sabo was a driving force behind the Herndon Hornets’ golden era, helping lead the program to 10 district titles and 4 regional championships during his tenure.
While there, Steve and wife Carol’s son, Chris Sabo, earned distinction as a two-time Virginia state champion, including a standout senior season with a 34-0 record—an achievement Coach Sabo guided closely. The father-son bond strengthened both their legacies and inspired future generations at Herndon and beyond.
Coach Sabo was inducted into the Herndon High School Hall of Fame as a charter member, recognizing his foundational impact on the school’s wrestling tradition, as well as recognizing his decades of teaching in Fairfax County Public Schools having broadened and deepened his influence on so many young people.
As a respected figure in freestyle wrestling, he has taken on prestigious positions as a USA Junior World Team Coach, guiding national-level competitors in both Virginia and New York.
Coach Sabo later established and serves as Founder and Advisor of the Glynn Coastal Wrestling Club in Georgia, demonstrating his continued commitment to the sport of wrestling.
With over 40 years of dedicated coaching experience, Steve Sabo's influence spans generations of wrestlers—from high school champions to national freestyle competitors—cementing his reputation as a true steward of the sport!
