Ryan Garlitz

Ryan Garlitz is honored to be chosen as the Massachusetts recipient of the Dave Shultz High School Excellence Award. Ryan is from Manchester-by-the Sea and wrestled for St. John's Prep under Hall of Fame Coach Manny Costa. Ryan was a four year starter, three year captain, and 3x MVP of team. Ryan finished his high school career 223-13, broke the Massachusetts record for most wins, had 153 pins (tied Mass state record), and is ranked 16th in the country at 138 pounds by USA Wrestling Magazine. He was a 4x Sectional finalist (2x Outstanding Wrestler), 3x Division 1 State Champion (2x Outstanding Wrestler, 1x Most Falls), 3x All-State Finalist (1x champ), and finished top 3 at New England's 3x (2nd, 3rd, 3rd). He was a 4x Catholic Conference All-Star, 4x Marshfield Holiday Champ, and 3x Woburn Tourney Champ. Ryan also was a NHSCA All-American, Disney Duals All-Star Division All-American, 2016 World of Wrestling Reno World Champion, World of Wrestling All-American, Mass Fargo team member, 3x Boston Globe All Scholastic, 3x Boston Herald All-Scholastic, 4x Salem News All-Star and Wrestler of the Year, 4x NHSCA Wrestling Academic All-American, and is a Mass Wrestling Hall of Fame member. Ryan has been wrestling since he was 5 years old. He knows many of the other Shultz Award winners before him as teammates and as coaches. Ryan is proud to be mentioned with them and be in their company. As a student athlete at St Johns Prep, Ryan was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, 4 year honor student, and has a 4.0 GPA. He also volunteers as a tutor for underclassman and is a wrestling coach. Ryan will be continuing his academic and wrestling career at the University of Maryland. He will be wrestling Division 1 in the Big 10 under coach Alex Clemsen.
