John Johnston learned his wrestling in Clearfield, Pennsylvania where he won the PIAA championship as a junior in1952. He attended Penn State University and was a 3-time EIWA titlist winning the National Championship as a junior and placing third the following year. Following graduation John coached at Steven’s Trade School for six years, his teams posting a record of 49-9-1. He then moved on to coach at Princeton University for 29 years with a record of 382-199-9. He coached 10 Ivy League team championships and one EIWA team championship. John also officiated dual meets and tournaments at the college level. He served on the NCAA Wrestling Sports Committee for five years and as chairman for four. He continues his involvement in wrestling working with the NCAA in their Drug Testing Programs.
