Cal Cherrington

Throughout his sports career, Cal Cherrington has certainly gone from being a 'small' statured athlete to a 'big' example in life, especially in the sport of wrestling. Cal began as 90 pound athlete when he entered the hallways of Aurora Hinkley High School. He participated at the Colorado State Championships during his prep wrestling career. Cal was not only a competitive wrestler, but showed his determination in bull riding as a young man. Cal was able to grow in stature and bring his determination to coaching in the sport of wrestling. He coached thirty-six state placers and seven state champions. Cal was the Colorado USA National Team Coach for six years. He was inducted into the Metropolitan League Hall of Fame in 2002. Cal was a USA Wrestling official from 1983 to 2002. He then took up that field again in 2009. He officiated in high school wrestling from 2003 to 2006. Coach Cherrington met his wife, Tami, (a gymnast) while attending University of Northern Colorado in 1976. They were married in 1980, and began their teaching careers. Cal started his wrestling coaching career in Kremmling, Colorado. He then moved to East Grand where he taught Social Studies. Cal coached wrestling at both the middle and high school levels from 1980 to 2014. With a brief hiatus from work, Coach Cherrington was able to travel with his college age children, son Ben, a NCAA champion wrestler at Boise State, who had been named to the All-Century PAC 12 Team. Daughter Erin's volleyball career included the NAIA Volleyball Championship All-Tournament Team plus earning All- American honors. Erin was also named, Senior Female Athlete of the Year, at the College of Idaho. Coach Cherrington has always asked his wrestlers to do their best. He has encouraged them to be a positive example for others. He has taught them to achieve something that they, at one time, may have considered impossible to accomplish. Coach Cherrington has profoundly touched the hearts, minds, and souls of the young people he has mentored. Teaching them about breaking self imposed limits. He has impressed the ethics of hard work, discipline, loyalty, perseverance and true grit to the young lives he has touched. Cal often said to his athletes, "You can be upset, but only for a short time and never publicly. You can feel bad after a loss, but not for long because you need to get back to work, flush the negative and get back to work on improving weaknesses."
