Homer Spring

Homer Spring began his wrestling career during his junior year at White Oak High School in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

After graduating from high school in 1973, he was an assistant coach for White Oak for three years.

In 1977 he graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in mathematics and began teaching at Bertie Senior High. He then went to Dixon High where he spent the next 34 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic director (1985-2012).

In 1985, Dixon started a wrestling program, and Coach Spring was an assistant before becoming head coach in 1987.

In 1990, Dixon High School won the first NCHSAA State Dual Team Championship in the 1A/2A classification. They followed up that title with Dual Team titles in 1992 and 1994 as well as a State Tournament title in 1993. Along the way, Coach Spring's teams won multiple Eastern Regional championships in the 1990's.

After retiring from coaching wrestling, Coach Spring continued to advocate for middle school wrestling in Onslow County as well as officiate at the local, regional, and state level.

In 2016, Coach Spring was inducted into the Jacksonville-Onslow Hall of Fame, and the Dixon Bulldog Wrestling Invitational was renamed the "Homer Spring Bulldog Wrestling Invitational" in his honor.
