Jack Suman

It would be a nearly impossible task to recount everything that Jack Suman has done for the sport of wrestling. After all, he is considered one of the "Founding Fathers" of the sport in Florida.

After moving to Florida in 1962, Suman started the program at North Palm Beach Senior High School, one of the first wrestling programs in Florida along with Norland, Miami Military, Coral Park and Archbishop Curly. He also coached at North Miami High School.

It would not be the only program he initiated, as he also started the program at Hialeah-Miami Lakes in 1971.

Suman had over 300 career victories from 1962-87, and is credited with having the first two Florida wrestlers to earn full wrestling scholarships, as Bill Bryson and Frank Forrester both received scholarships to Eastern Illinois University.

In addition to coaching, Suman was an outstanding official, working as an Florida High School Athletic Association clinician and official rules interpreter from 1964-74. He was the first Florida representative to the National Federation of State High Schools rules committee from 1978-82. Suman also officiated and helped organize officials for the Sunshine Open in the early 1970s with Ric Tucci and Jack McNeil. He also officiated the International styles, working at the 1976 and 1982 Olympic Regional Trials at Miami-Dade Community College.
