John Lowe
John Lowe began his wrestling career in the ninth grade at St. Michaels High School, one of the smallest public schools in Maryland.
He was a team captain and 1983 state qualifier for National Wrestling Hall of Fame coach King Hill. He continued his career as a three-year starter for another Hall of Fame coach, Gary Franke.
It was during college that John began to work at the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Camps with legendary Hall of Fame Distinguished Members Ed Peery and Lloyd Keaser. He continued to work as a counselor and coach for 20 straight summers.
Lowe found Greco-Roman to be his favorite style, winning five state Open Division titles and an AAU National gold medal at 163 pounds.
In 1993. Lowe's coaching career began by restarting the program at his alma mater, St. Michaels, in 1988 and continuing to coach there until 1990. He became coach and earned his master's degree in English at Salisbury State University in its final year of competition in 1991-92.
Following a year as an assistant coach at Oakland Mills High School in Columbia in 1993-94, Lowe took the reins at Western Maryland College, which became McDaniel College in 2002. After having only six athletes on its roster at the end of the 1994-95 season, Western Maryland won the first of four Centennial Conference titles four years later.
Lowe was named Centennial Conference Coach of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2002, and was runner-up for National Coach of the Year in 2000.
McDaniel College had five Top 25 finishes and finished as high as 11th in the dual meet rankings. Lowe coached the Green Terror's first All-Americans and had six in his nine seasons.
In addition to five years helping to coach the Maryland National Team, he was head coach of the 1994 Cadet team that still holds the record for the highest winning percentage in state history while crowning two national champions and having five All-Americans.
After the birth of his second son in 2003, John decided to move to brand-new Winters Mill High School in Westminster. In his nine seasons there so far, the Falcons have had four top four finishes in the state, winning back-to-back tournament titles in 2011 and 2012, and winning the dual meet title in 2012, going a perfect 32-0 and setting a state record for margin of victory with a 66-4 win in the state finals. John has coached 28 individual state place-winners. The Falcons have also won four consecutive Carroll County titles, boasting 23 individual champions in nine seasons.
John continues to teach and coach at Winters Mill, and lives in Westminster with his wife, Lauren, and his two sons Hunter (12) and Alex (9). He is also only a few miles from his namesake uncle, John V. Lowe the 5th, who was in the inaugural class of honorees by the Maryland Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
