Steve McDaniel

Steve was introduced to wrestling in 1969 at an 8th grade clinic hosted by Kaukauna?s first state qualifier, Dick Huss. Steve has been directly involved in Kaukauna wrestling for 44 of it?s 48 year history. He wrestled at Kaukauna High School from 1969-1973 starting at 130 lbs. as a freshman and up to heavyweight as a senior. In 1977 he started coaching as a volunteer with the high school team and the newly formed kids program run through the Kaukauna Recreation Department. Steve continues to coach both levels in different capacities today. As an assistant to Don Kilgas, he was an integral part of coaching Kaukauna?s first state champion, Dave Viaene, in 1983. Throughout the 80?s and 90?s Steve became very involved in Freestyle Wrestling by running various tournaments and a training site. In 1992, he joined Scott Kluever as a cadet state freestyle coach for the Wisconsin National team. He continued to help coach the team until 1999. As part of a program run by Larry Marchionda, Steve organized a visit by a Japanese youth exchange team to Kaukauna. In 2000, Steve coached in the Wisconsin and Minnesota senior All-Star event. He has also been a referee, pairing director, and tournament manager for numerous Freestyle, Greco, and Folkstyle tournaments. Steve was co-head coach of the Kaukauna High School varsity team with Jeff Matczak from 1992-2001. During those 9 years, Kaukauna won 28 tournaments, 4 conference titles, and were State Team runner up in 2000. His co-head coaching record was 124-19-2, including 5 FVA Coach of the Year awards and 4 trips to Team State. With Steve on the coaching staff, Kaukauna has had a record of 458-117-4, 10 Team State appearances, 11 individual state champions, 52 state place winners, 120 state qualifiers, and 118 FVA conference champions. In the 36 years Steve has been with the Varsity staff, only once has Kaukauna gone without a conference champion (1981). The last time Kaukauna did not have a wrestler at the State Tournament was 1984. In 2002, Steve was inducted into the Kaukauna High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Steve has served on the board of the national level Cheesehead wrestling tournament since it?s inception in 1999. He has also coached little league baseball and girls softball. Community involvement for Steve extended into various committees within the school district as well as the Kaukauna Alumni Association. He served the Alumni Association as treasurer, president, and chairman of the board. Knowing that fundraising is a part of success, Steve has initiated over 100 different fundraising events. His career employment is in the lift truck industry, currently with Conger Toyotalift. Understanding the importance of education, he attended the original PACE coaches certification program with the WIAA, is bronze level certified with USA wrestling and has taught many copper level classes. Wrestling has been a life choice for Steve, his wife Ann, daughter Ketty (husband Lucas and son Owen) Clow, and son Chris (wife Mary and daughter Emmy) McDaniel.
