Paul Stephen Case was born in Scottsbluff, NE. He graduated from Anderson College in Anderson, IN with a degree in foreign language and education. Always an athlete and competitor, his favorite sports were wrestling and football and he excelled in both. Longing for adventure after college graduation, he and his new bride Nancy joined the U.S. Peace Corps to teach English in Tunisia, North Africa. After returning to the U.S. in 1968 he started teaching French and German at Washington Park High School in Racine, WI and began his wrestling and football coaching career...the most rewarding years as assistant coach under Andy Fenderson and Phil Dobbs. His passion for wrestling and his love for kids was unmistakable by those who knew him. He was instrumental in cofounding the Washington Park Kids Wrestling Club for Racine in 1978 with only 3 kids and watched it grow to over 150 wrestlers. The club continues today. Some of those wrestlers went on to be state champions, collegiate All-Americans, and elite USAW senior level performers. He was also a strong sounding board and advocate for Real Pro Wrestling, a professional wrestling league that his son Matt cofounded and produced. Steve was a WIAA and USAW official, took kids to countless tournaments, camps, and attended many clinics, seminars, workshops, Big Ten, NCAA and Olympic wrestling events. He was a tireless coach with a "can do" attitude, a great encourager, motivator, mentor and character model. In addition to his own sons Matt and Jason, he coached countless students to success. Preferring not to keep track of his win-loss record, he concentrated on teaching fundamentals and fairness. The wins came by themselves based on that focus. In only his second season as Racine Horlick varsity wrestling coach, he took a team that had traditionally struggled to the WIAA state tournament. Steve's passion on the mat and field was equally paralleled in the classroom. Wanting his students to experience adventure and learning outside the classroom he started a camping/fishing club, an annual biking trail trip and led many European student trips. He shared life lessons with clever encouragement and motivation...his gift of time to his students inspired excellence not only in academics but in athletics. His reward was seeing the success of those he taught and coached. We are sure he would want to give credit for his success to those dedicated students, to the committed coaches and teachers with whom he worked and to the hundreds of parent supporters. Steve was an active leader at his church serving in many capacities through his years. Besides sports, his interests included all types of music, fly fishing, camping, reading and traveling. He was a Packers, Cubs, Badgers, and Northwestern fan...always ready to watch a game or match. Along the way, Steve developed a passion for sailing and had many sea adventures near and far from home. His love for competition inspired him to crew on many races. He was a happy man with a zest for life and no regrets. He was extremely proud of his sons and treasured the times spent with grandchildren, family and friends. His retirement motto was "I want to do and see as much as I can for as long as I can." He, his laughter and passion are truly admired and greatly missed. Steve passed away unexpectedly as the result of a sailing accident after finishing a race as a crewman in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race off the Virginia coast on Friday, October 12, 2012. To carry on his legacy, The Steve Case Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established by the family. This scholarship is designed for college-bound student-athletes (male or female) from the Racine Unified School District who have participated and excelled in athletics and have exhibited a strong work ethic and devotion in the classroom and community.
