Ed Ruth starred at Blair Academy in New Jersey as a senior and was 2009 High School All-American and top-ranked recruit nationally in his weight class.

He was a two-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association AAA place-winner, finishing fourth and fifth his final two years at Susquehanna Township High School, and won the National High School Coaches Association High School Junior National Championships in 2008.
