After a year as a graduate assistant at Iowa State, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Ankeny. In 1987 he embarked on a 26 year career as a head coach for the Hawks, posting a career record of 354-141,which ranks as 12th best on the all-time win list. He mentored 105 state qualifiers, 32 state place winners and four champions, while his team was a consistent top 10 finisher in the traditional tournament. He also directed Ankeny to two fifth place finishes in four appearances in the State Dual Team Tournament. He was a five time District Coach-of-the-Year and the 2013 Class 3A Coach-of-the-Year.
