Dr. Capone had a brilliant high school wrestling career at Watertown High School where he won two New York State titles. This success continued in college where he was a 2-time All-American at Hofstra University, including finishing 2nd in the Division I NCAA Tournament in 1885. Following graduation from Hofstra, Dr. Capone attended the University of Buffalo where he earned a Doctorate of Dental Surgery Degree. In 1990 he moved to Johnson City to begin his dentistry career and also began his coaching career as head wrestling coach at Johnson City High School. By the time he retired from coaching in 2012, he had built one of the finest wrestling dynasties in the country. In his over twenty years as a coach, Dr. Capone's teams have compiled a record of 241-69-2 and have won numerous team championships at various high school tournaments. His teams have won three New York State team championships (1999, 2003, and 2006). In addition, Johnson City High School wrestling teams under his direction have won 10 Section IV championships and 12 Class A Sectional championships. Furthermore, his teams have won 14 Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championships. Dr. Capone has developed 8 New York State Champions including his son, Peter, in 2008. Presently young Peter is having a successful career at heavyweight for Ohio State. Dr. Capone has produced two high school national champions: Joe Privitere and Sean McCormick. In 2007 wrestling at the 197 weight class for American University, Josh Glenn became Coach Capone's first NCAA Division I wrestling champion - the ultimate goal for all coaches. Dr. Capone has been recognized on several occasions for his success. He has been inducted into the New York State Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Johnson City High School Hall of Fame, the Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Hofstra University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Section IV Hall of Fame. Dr. Capone presently resides in Johnson City, with his wife Susan. They have two children, Peter and Emily who is a diver on the Allegheny College swim team. While Coach Capone built one of the most successful wrestling programs in the country, he will be fondly remembered for the positive effect he had on all the wrestlers he coached and provided leadership for at Johnson City. For his many years of dedication to the sport of wrestling, the New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Dr. Peter Capone by inducting him into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
