Doug Duell

Like father, like son could well describe Doug Duell's connection to high school wrestling and his induction into the Hall of Fame. He and his father, Ben, are the first father-son combination to be inducted by the Colorado Hall of Fame into the National. Ben, by the way, was inducted last year. Doug graduated from Goodland High School and was the first four-time state champion in Kansas history having won titles in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975. From there it was on to Oklahoma State University on a full scholarship, the first full given in the sport by the school. Doug had an outstanding season as a freshman qualifying for the National NCAA tournament and just missed placing. He had a 4-2 record in the tournament. However, he was still selected to the Freshman all-American team. However, injuries plagued Doug during his sophomore and junior seasons. And, injuries would hinder him again in his senior season as he would fall on bad times two weeks before the national tournament. From there, it was right into the coaching ranks. Doug became the head coach at Tulsa's Edison High School, but soon moved to coach in Atwood, Kansas for the next three years. He then made his way to Burlington where he coached the Cougars from 1984-2012. Burlington won state titles in 2002, 2010 and 2011. Duell was the Region Coach of the Year in 2010 as well as being named the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Colorado Coach of the Year. He also is a member of the Kansas Wrestling Hall of Fame.
