Doug Duell
Like father, like son could well describe Doug Duell's connection to high school wrestling and his being recognized by the Hall of Fame.
He and his father, Ben, are the first father-son combination to be honored by the Colorado Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Ben, by the way, was inducted last year.
Doug graduated from Goodland High School and was the first four-time state champion in Kansas history winning titles in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975.
From there it was on to Oklahoma State University on a full scholarship, the first full scholarship given in the sport by the school. Doug had an outstanding season as a freshman and qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships and just missed placing, going 4-2 in the tournament. He was still selected as a member of Freshman All-American team. Injuries plagued him during his sophomore and junior seasons, and would hinder him again as a senior.
From there, it was right into the coaching ranks as the head coach of Edison High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Duell soon moved to coach in Atwood, Kansas, spending three years there. He then made his way to Burlington, Colorado, where he coached from 1984-2012, leading the Cougars to state team titles in 2002, 2010 and 2011. Duell was the Region Coach of the Year in 2010 as well as being named the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Colorado Chapter Coach of the Year. He also is a member of the Kansas Wrestling Hall of Fame.
