Steve Crocker
Since 1968, Steve Crocker has consistently been spotted at wrestling events, usually working in some capacity, as wrestler, coach, or administrator. Young Steve was introduced to wrestling by a classmate in junior high school. At Hampton High School, he developed into a three-year starter, state place-winner, and team captain. After his 1972 graduation, he had an undefeated regular season at Hargrave Military academy, placing third in the National Prep Tournament. He attended the University of Richmond on a full football scholarship and was an integral part of the Spiders' first wrestling team, leading them as captain and as a freshman placing second in the Southern Conference. Returning to Hampton in 1977, he assisted the Crabbers' staff in baseball and football and was head coach in wrestling. In 1979, he embarked on a long and varied career as a teacher and coach in the Central Region; a head coaching position for the Armstrong-Kennedy Wildcats from '79 to '81, a stint with the Hermitage Panthers from '81 to '94, and a culminating tenure as head coach of the Mills Godwin Eagles. During this time, he also head-coached the Highland Springs Youth Wrestling Club and directed the Talon Wrestling Club. In addition to the coaching and teaching, Steve found the energy to acquire a Master's Degree in Sports Management (also from UR) in '91 and embark on a parallel career as an administrator for our sport. He chaired Virginia/USA Wrestling from '92 to '97, was the National Teams coordinator from '97 to 2011, and since then has been Treasurer for the Virginia Wrestling Association. He has also served on the Virginia High School Coaches Association executive board as chairman of the wrestling committee. Since his retirement from teaching in '09, Steve stays close to wrestling as a volunteer assistant at Godwin.
