Ken Berger
For more than half a century, Ken Berger has been involved in our great sport of amateur wrestling. His love of our sport began in 1960, wrestling for the Riegel Ridge Rams in grade school (where he beat the future boxer, Larry Holmes). Next came Delaware Valley Regional High School in Frenchtown, NJ, where he won more matches than anyone in the '60s. He then won an appointment to the US Naval Academy, wrestling for Hall of Fame coach Ed Peery. He qualified for the NCAA Nationals in 1973. In that year, he was also a finalist for the Coaches' Calvert Award, given to the top scholar-athlete of his graduating class. During his 20 years as a Marine pilot, wrestling was still front and center; there was a wrestling mat wherever he went, on an aircraft carrier or in the back of a gym. As a coach, he provided the Marine team with a number of wrestlers who competed at the international level. As a major serving at the Pentagon, he became part of our Virginia wrestling community in 1988, coaching the Cavalier Wrestling Club at WT Woodson High School. He had also in 1985 joined USA Wrestling and was the VA/USA Wrestling Officials Director for 1988 to 2002. As the assistant state chairman, he saw over 4000 wrestlers join the program, which produced two NCAA champions and many All-Americans from Virginia. A competitor, a coach, a referee, and then an announcer. . . .Ken is now best known as the "Voice of Wrestling" around the world. He has been the man on the microphone for events from the Virginia Duals to the Beijing and London Olympic Games. His sign-off is always the same: "Thank you for supporting the world's oldest and greatest sport! Amateur Wrestling!"
