Darren Sipe

Issaquah High School 1966-1967 Newport High School 1967-1974 University of Washington 1974-1980 Newport High School 1986-1998 Darren Sipe wrestled at Mt. Rainier High School for Hall of Fame Coach Dick Brenneman, then at Central Washington College for Hall of Fame Coach Eric Beardsley where he placed 5th at the NAIA National Championships. He also played varsity football for four years at Central Washington. Sipe continued wrestling after college with great success. He was an 11 time national place winner in collegiate, freestyle and greco-roman. Three time National Greco-Roman Champion; Masters Freestyle and Canadian National Freestyle Champion and first alternate on the 1968 and 1072 Greco-Roman USA Olympic teams. Coach Sipe taught 31 years and coached wrestling 20 years at Newport High School, completing a dual meet record of 251-63-3 and coached 45 league champions and 26 state placers. He also coached at the University of Washington for six years, three as an assistant coach and three as head coach. His dual meet record at the U of W was 38-12-1 and his collegiate wrestlers won 12 individual Pac-10 Championships and three NCAA national placings. Darren was very active on the state and national level s interscholastically and intercollegiately. He directed and hosted two state high school wrestling championships at the UW; served on the Washington State Cultural Exchange Committee and the WSWCA Executive Board; Pac-10 Coaches Executive Board and Pac-10 representative to the NCAA Rules Committee. Coach was also very active hosting Cultural Exchange teams at the high school and college levels. He also coaches the 1972 undefeated Washington Exchange team to Japan. Additionally, Sipe was a sought after clinician statewide and nationally including Pc 10 tournaments, NAIA National Tournament and National Physical Education Convention guest speaker. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to wrestling, Darren has received the following honors: 6 time Kingco League Coach of the Year; 3 time regional Coach of the Year; 1993 State AAA Coach of the Year; Pac-10 Coach of the Year and NCAA National Rookie Coach of the Year in 1978. Additionally, Coach Sip has been inducted into the Central Washington University Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000. Darren and his wife Jan are enjoying retirement residing in LaConner, Washington and Mesa, Arizona. They have six adult children and ten grandchildren.
