Ray Barnes
Puyallup High School 1956-1970 Ray Barnes was a graduate from Pacific Lutheran College in 1954 where he earned Evergreen Conference All-Northwest and All-West Coast and Little All-American honors as a football player. Without any prior wrestling experience Barnes started the Puyallup High School wrestling program in 1956. During the 1960's Coach Barnes and Puyallup High School hosted the West Central District Wrestling Tournament and he was a pioneer in forming the Puget Sound League. Coach Barnes won five Puget Sound League Wrestling Championships, six West Central District titles and compiled a dual match record of 115 wins, 36 loses and 4 ties. Ray also coached three state champions at Puyallup High School. In 1970, Ramon Barnes became the athletic director for the Puyallup School District and continued his contributions to the sport of wrestling serving s the South Puget Sound League wrestling commissioner providing outstanding leadership as the league continued to add new teams and sports. Coach Barnes has received numerous recognitions for his contributions to wrestling, receiving the SPSL Award for 30 years of service to the Sport of Wrestling and the West Central District Meritorious Service Award in 1986. Additionally, Coach Barnes was inducted into the Washington Secondary School Athletic Administrators Hall of Fame (1987), The Pierce County Hall of Fame (2010), and the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame (1986). Ramon and his wife Dorothy reside in Puyallup. They have three adult children, Lori Apostle, Ramon Jr. and Brent. Brent had continued in his father's footsteps and is the very successful wrestling Coach at Lake Stevens High School. Coach Barnes' grandson Burke Barnes won four state wrestling championships while at Lake Stevens High School.
