Randall Whitehead
Randy Whitehead was first introduced to "The Sport of the Gods" at Lawrence Academy (LA), where he learned wrestling from legendary Coach Bob Shepherd. It turned out to be a life-changing experience for Randy, who qualified for two New England Prep tournaments while at LA. Whitehead went on to captain the Boston University (BU) club wrestling team before transferring to Miami (Ohio) University, where he wrestled four years at Miami under coaches Jay Fry and Joe Galat on teams that won two Mid-American Conference titles.
After college, Randy started a wrestling program at Greenville (Ohio) High School before moving back to Massachusetts to work as an assistant coach for Arnold Shaw at Boston State College. In 1970, after earning a Master's Degree in Education, Randy became the head coach at Chelmsford High School, where he guided the Lions for ten years. At Chelmsford, Coach Whitehead led his teams to three state championships and one New England title. With back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1976 and 1977, Chelmsford enjoyed a 31-meet undefeated streak under Randy's tutelage. During his tenure, Coach Whitehead developed twelve State individual champions, nine New England champions, and one high school All-American. Randy's dual meet record was an incredible 129-25-2, a winning percentage (83%) that few wrestling coaches can match.
While coaching at Chelmsford, Randy served as Secretary of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Wrestling Coaches Association (MIWCA). Coach Whitehead launched one of Massachusetts' first youth wrestling programs in Chelmsford, where he pioneered girls' wrestling on the youth level. Randy also worked for several years as a high school and collegiate wrestling official, and coached at Concord-Carlisle High School.
After his coaching career, Randy worked as Athletic Director at Chelmsford High School for eight years, proudly serving Principal George Simonian during a time that Chelmsford won seven Boston Globe Dalton Trophies for overall athletic excellence. For his accomplishments, Randy has been inducted into the MIWCA Hall of Fame, the Chelmsford High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame, and the Miami University Cradle of Coaches. He was also selected as a Boston Globe and a MIWCA Coach-of-the-Year.
Since retiring from a 35-year career in education, Randy has volunteered as a wrestling coach at the Manchester NH YMCA and at the Fairgrounds Junior High School in Nashua, NH. Randy is also engaged in other arenas, as he sits on the Board of Directors of the Chelmsford Historical Society, is an active member of the Chelmsford High School Alumni Association, and is an elected member to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, serving South Nashua.
Coach Whitehead is thrilled that so many of his former wrestlers have become successful wrestling coaches and wonderful human beings. However, Randy is most proud of his two loving children, Jennifer and Keith, and his three amazing grandchildren - Avory, Emma and Jaxson.
In recognition of his many contributions to the Massachusetts wrestling community, Randy Whitehead is being honored by the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his Lifetime Achievement in Wrestling.
