Joe Humphreys

Joe Humphreys has attained national prominence as a expert fly-fisherman, appearing on television, writing books and providing instruction across the country.

He has received many fly fishing awards and honors, including being a member of the United States team that finished 13th at the 1989 Fly Fishing World Championships. Humphreys won the Michigan One Fly in 1991 and finished runner-up at the Canadian One Fly in 1993. He finished sixth at the Jackson Hole One Fly in 1989 and eighth at the World Wide Open in Ireland in 1999.

Humphreys has been a fishing instructor to many, including former president Jimmy Carter, former vice president Dick Cheney, basketball coaching legend Bobby Knight and actor Liam Neeson.

His athletic career began in wrestling at State College High School in State College, Pennsylvania, and continued while he served in the United States Navy. Humphreys then wrestled and boxed at Penn State University.

Humphreys coached Penns Valley High School to its first varsity win in 1957, and later coached Bald Eagle Area's first Pennsylvania state champion, Lew Craig, who won the title at 165 pounds in 1968. He also served as an assistant coach to Bill Koll at Penn State from 1970-72.

For years, he and Fran Fisher were co-hosts and commentators for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic
Athletic Association Wrestling Championships held at Penn State.

He is a member of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Bald Eagle Area Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Humphreys lives in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, right along a stream and continues to fly fish and follow wrestling.
